The one thing you should know about your skin, is that it’s always changing. Factors such as age, hormones and changing seasons are just some of the reasons why you’ll notice changes in skin tone, texture and luminosity (just to name a few!) over the course of a year. It’s especially important to pay attention to your skin as the weather changes, when tell-tale signs of long days in the sun can make their presence known. For me, smatterings of pesky pigmentation, dull skin and congestion tend to appear towards the end of summer, reminding me that now is the time to take action.

So as the sun set on another glorious summer, I spoke to the experts about whipping my skin into shape to brave the colder months.

I booked into La Belle Peau (the only place I trust in Perth with my skin) for a consultation and a treatment. I met with Perth’s very own ‘skin whisperer’ Kim Tran, who whisked me away one Tuesday evening for a consultation and subsequent treatment. Kim looked closely at my skin and we discussed my major skin concerns and what I wanted to achieve which is a brighter complexion, improved skin texture and to fade pigmentation.

Based on my concerns, Kim prescribed the Ultraceuticals A-Zyme Peel, a non-invasive and comfortable skin rejuvenation treatment. The A-Zyme peel combines fast-acting potent ingredients Retinol and Bromelain to refresh, refine, hydrate and plump the skin. It’s also perfect for those with acne and congestion complaints as it works to manage the skin’s oil levels and reduce the buildup of dead skin cells. Just what the doctor ordered!

Why peel?
Peels use natural acids to slough of the top layers of skin that are dull and damaged. The benefits of Ultraceuticals A-Zyme Peel in particular include: minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hydrates and plumps the skin, improves clarity and restores radiance to the complexion, unclogs pores and exfoliates skin. And that’s only a few!

Kim explained this peel involved a few days of downtime, but with the Easter weekend nearing and a few days down south planned, this didn’t phase me.

The treatment began with a thorough double cleanse, using Ultraceuticals Ultra Bright Foaming Cleanser, which sent me into a state of utter relaxation. Kim then prepped my skin with the Ultra Sonopheresis Machine before applying the A-Zyme Peel to my face, neck and décolletage. Upon application, the peel tingles a bit on my skin, but as I’m sure all beauty aficionados will agree, I love this feeling because I know it’s working.

Kim gently massaged in the peel with the Ultra Sonopheresis Machine, allowing the enzymes to deeply penetrate and work their magic on my skin. After the peel is removed, Kim applies the beautifully nourishing Ultraceuticals Ultra Hydrating Lotion, a super lightweight, fast absorbing lotion which restores suppleness to the skin without a shiny finish.

Following my treatment I am sent home loaded up with an aftercare program and products from Ultraceuticals to help me achieve my skin care goals. For the first 5-7 days I use the Ultra Brightening Cleanser, Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum, Ultra Hydrating Lotion and plenty of SPF during the day. For the first few days, I noticed slight peeling around my chin and mouth, which then moved to my nose and forehead. This had completely cleared by day 5 and my skin was visibly brighter, clearer with a noticeable glow. And although there wasn’t much need for it, makeup sat beautifully on my skin.

My skin continued to improve once it healed with oiliness and congestion a thing of the past, pigmentation visibly faded and a brighter, clearer complexion. I have now incorporated the Even Skintone Serum Concentrate into my morning routine as a way to keep pigmentation at bay. At night I have included the Ultra A Perfecting Serum, a healthy dose of Retinol to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and the Ultra A Perfecting Eye Cream, to help plump and refine delicate skin around the eyes.

My skin has never been happier. It is bright, clear and free from blemishes. The powerhouse ingredients of the A-Zyme Peel worked wonders on my dull, lacklustre complexion that was plagued with congestion. The aftercare products that were prescribed have helped keep my skin in check and continue to keep it looking brilliant.

So if your skin is looking a little sad after summer, book yourself in for a transformative Ultraceuticals peel and get it in tip top shape before the harsh winter weather is upon us.

Don’t let the wet weather dampen your spirit; you can still achieve good head when it’s pouring and windy. Just stock up on these hair heroes and say hello to good hair days all season long.

Winter hair products

1. Evo Gluttony Shampoo

I’ve tried a lot of volumising shampoos in my time but this gem from Evo delivers the goods. My hair is fine and requires a bit of grit to get the volume going but since using Evo’s Gluttony Shampoo I’ve discovered that clean hair and volume can be achieved. Seems I can have my cake and eat it too.

2. Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam

3. Coles Large Radial Brush

There’s no need to spend a fortune on hair tools, I’ve found some of the best brushes at supermarkets and chemists. This barrel brush from Coles (of all places!) is perfect for blow-drying because its light and the perfect diameter for creating loose waves.

4. VS Sassoon Ultimate Salon 2200 Hairdryer

No girl should ever be forced to go through winter without a hairdryer. The summer months don’t call for daily blow drying as much but when the colder weather takes over wet hair is a bit hard to deal with. The VS Sassoon Ultimate Salon is my best friend at the moment; it’s powerful, dries my hair in minutes and comes with a diffusing nozzle for gorgeous natural curls.

5. Toni & Guy Casual Hairspray

Finish off the look with this fabulously lightweight, texturizing spray. Toni & Guy’s entire Casual range is the perfect toolkit to creating messy, relaxed waves and the hairspray is a standout product for me. Like Aveda’s Phomollient, this spray won’t leave your hair stiff and feel like its full of product. It’s easily brushed out too!

I love the creamy texture of this lippy, just as much as I love its deep red hue.

Winter Beauty Edit: Skincare

As the cooler weather sets in, I find my habits changing. More nights spent on the couch, more comfort foods being dished up and more time spent hitting the snooze button! My beauty habits also change during winter as I reach for richer moisturisers and spend time pampering my skin in preparation for the warmer months ahead. I have hand picked my top 5 skincare products that I am swearing by this winter. Stay tuned next week for the makeup edition!

1. QV Face Gentle Foaming Cleanser

I love this cleanser because it effectively removes all traces of dirt and makeup without leaving skin feeling dry and “over cleansed”. It’s become a staple in my cleansing routine, is gentle on the skin and on the wallet. The QV Face Gentle Foaming Cleanser is also suitable to use all year round, just be sure to double cleanse during the Winter months when makeup tends to go on a little thicker!

2. Elemental Herbology Facial Detox Purifying Mask

This face mask is an absolute must for the cooler months. Exposure to harsher elements and a tendency to layer on more makeup can make way for some seriously congested skin. The Elemental Herbology Facial Detox Purifying Mask has become my best friend on Sunday evenings when I’m getting ready for the week ahead. Create a weekly ritual for some pampering and your skin will love you for it! This mask literally draws out impurities, so they may show up for a few days after using it, but will settle down pretty quickly.

3. The Body Shop Tea Tree Blemish Fade Night Lotion

Combat impurities with this wonder product from The Body Shop. Tea tree oil is known for its magic powers at eliminating blemishes and this overnight lotion includes antibacterial properties that helps fight the appearance of damaged skin. My skin is prone to a breakout and I love applying this at night and waking up to some seriously good results.

4. Aesop Rind Concentrate Body Balm

Don’t forget about the rest of your skin this winter and lather up with this delicious body balm from Aesop. What I love most about this moisturiser is how quickly it is absorbed by the skin, leaving behind a silky smooth texture. The citrus based fragrance is also super invigorating in this grey weather – perfect for applying after your morning shower to wake up for the day!

5. Aesop Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser

I feel very indulgent when I use this body cleanser, its almost like being in a day spa. This is one of Aesop’s best sellers, and its no wonder given its heavenly scent and ability to cleanse perfectly without leaving a trace of grime. As if it wasn’t hard enough to get out of the shower during winter, you’ll want to stay there all day with this beauty!

Autumn Beauty Must Haves

While the weather has only been teasing us with hints of cooler temperatures and the odd shower here and there, skin can take a bit of a battering as the seasons change. Some products like sunscreen are essential at any time of the year, but as our skin is exposed to harsher conditions during autumn and winter, it’s important to replenish essential oils and moisture.

There are some fab little creations on the market right now, check out my top 5:

1. Jurlique Skin Balancing Face Oil $65

Jurlique facial oils are wonderful, their lightweight formula softens, hydrates and restores, without leaving a greasy mess all over the place. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins this little number can be mixed with your daily moisturiser, as part of an at-home facial or on it’s own as a nourishing serum. It’s like a multivitamin for your skin and is perfect for replenishing the effects of harsh winds and colder climes.

2.  Kiehls Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream $36

My new BBF is the latest addition to the BB cream catalogue, Kiehls Actively Correcting and Beautifying BB Cream. This light all-in-one cream contains active ingredients that work to cover, colour and correct uneven skin tone and blemishes. Can be used with or without foundation, but settles nicely with a bit of mineral powder. This BB cream is available in 3 shades, fair, light and natural, and is free from parabens and fragrance. I also love the idea that my skin gets to drink coffee too…

4. Yves Saint Laurent Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain $50

Usher in autumn with a full magenta pout from YSL’s new glossy stain in Mauve Pigmente. This luxurious new lip product combines the texture and shine of a gloss with the long wear of a stain. Free from parabens, sulfates and phthalates, this lightweight stain stays put for a flawless finish all day long.

5. Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil $55

Take it all off with a deep cleansing oil that leaves skin clean, fresh and refined. Oil is actually the perfect ingredient to for cleansing your face, sounds bizarre, but bear with me here. Our skin secretes oil, and according to various chemistry wizards, like dissolves like, so really we’re dissolving and getting rid of the old dirty oil and replacing it with clean, nourishing oil. Shu Uemura’s luxurious facial oil helps unclog pores and washes away makeup and impurities whilst maintaining the skin’s vital moisture level. Ideal for normal to oily skin types and perfect for a deep winter cleanse.
